I am Michael Manzo. Open most CRM records and you see every button the system has. I think that is a mistake. A new lead does not need a convert button. A closed deal does not need an advance button. But if a button is on the screen, someone will press it, and the record ends up wrong. So we changed the rule. Fewer functions on the screen, only the ones the record's status allows, on a cleaner page. The screen never offers the wrong move. In Zoho CRM, a canvas is a page you design yourself.
This is our leads list. Each row shows only the buttons for its status. A new lead can be vetted or closed. A lead in contact can be marked ready to convert. Open one lead on two different days and the page changes with it. New, it offers two actions. Once we are in contact, it offers a different set. The page follows the lead. Some jobs need more than a button, so we build a widget: a small step-by-step panel, styled to match the page. This one changes an account type.
It offers only the valid moves, asks for a reason, and records the change when you save. It works the same way across the CRM. On accounts, the type decides. A client offers a check-in, and a prospect offers a new opportunity. On deals, the stage decides. A deal on hold offers resume, and nothing that moves it forward. The pages also look better. One style on every list and every record, so a person who learns one page already knows the rest. I will be honest about what this is.
I think canvases and widgets are a stopgap. We are heading to one surface, where an AI agent works the record with you and the screen follows your workflow and your journey. We call that AI Sales OS. Until then, this is a good first step. If your team lives in Zoho CRM and the screens show too much, start with one module. Let the status decide what a person can do. com.
