    React JavaScript, also referred to as React.js, is an open-source library from frontend user interfaces. Facebook (now Meta) originally developed React to build web and mobile applications. Meta along with a large community of contributing developers continue to maintain React. The React library is built on components where each component is a piece of functionality such as a button.

    Why use React versus plain old JavaScript? Imagine you have a web page in an application that has two buttons in different colors. Using JavaScript, you’d need to build and maintain the code for each button independently. This creates a lot of extra work and problems with code manageability. With React, you build a component, then style each use of that component using React “props” (short for properties).

    This makes it both faster to build apps and easier to maintain and change them in the future.

    When is React a good choice for a software application?

    React is particularly strong for single-page applications or applications that include pages with different panels or sections in which data needs to be loaded and rendered but when reloading the entire page deteriorates the user experience. This is because React can reload data on a page without having to reload the entire page. Imagine a web application that includes a set of tiles at the top with summary data and a data table below with detailed row-by-row information, and that the data in the tiles needs to be updated automatically when it changes on the backend. React can handle updates to each tile or to the data table without having to refresh the entire page.
